Most times, a weapon or a summon are straight upgrades, but by the end, you going to have to have so many different weapons and summons for different raids and different synergies. There's a lot of ways to build this 15-item equipment grid, and that's not even counting the hundred of characters to pick from for your party. I like to compare it to Engine-Tuning or Kitbashing There's literally thousands of weapons and summons in this game across the 6 element groups, which can have many different effects on your damage, skills, and HP, etc. Grid building is one of the most cryptic things to grapple with in GBF, but is also perhaps the strongest aspect of the game. This grid is what basically determines how strong you are in this game, and it's a MMOish cycle of beating quests to get better loot to beat harder quests. Then the equipment grids, you fill with loot you get from raids, quests, and the gacha. Characters are self-explanatory, and there are hundreds of them. Monthly events, dozens of permanent raids, guild wars, and so on.Īt the center of GBF is its 6-man party, 10-weapons and 5-summons equipment grid. The 2nd stage is when you're deeper into the game and really start to engage with core gameplay loop. This is what most people already mentioned in the thread, so I won't go too much into that. In this stage, you're just admiring all the pizzazz, while going through the by-the-books story (which does get better later on). The music, largely handled by Tsutomu Narita, is consistently incredible and one of my favorite JRPG OSTs ever. The aesthetics of the game is the classic JRPG, animeified in a fairly decent manner. The production values for this game are pretty great.

Cygames is very generous with free draws and whole I've put money into the game I've never felt like I needed to in order to progress or to have fun. The game mechanics and team building are interesting. 40 maybe?Īs for the game itself, grinding and watching numbers go up is dumb fun. There is a Lot of story there, near 200 chapters, and unfortunately the first big chunk of it where they introduce the main party for the main story isn't the best. One caveat is that there is also the main story for the game which proceeds in parallel to the events and character introductions (you kind of have to get used to unsynchronized stories). The stories for these events also cover a pretty wide range of genres, with mysteries, sci fi, tragedy, comedy, and it's all pretty well done and with a good localization. It's always building up the history and breadth of the game's world and its convoluted mythology. The game is good about making the back story available and giving you context. Sometimes these events are one offs, sometimes they have a continuing story that can pick up from an event that happened a year ago. Then every month at the end of the month there's a big new story that usually takes me about 90 minutes to 2 hours to play through diving in to the back story of characters that appear in the gacha or introducing new characters (that inevitably also will appear in the gacha). The artwork and brief stories you get when you draw a new character do a great job of giving you the outline of a character and drawing you in. Not every song is super duper outstanding but in general, the music of the game is beyond excellent. Basically at least two parallel timelines. It also has a weird multiple parallel stories thing going on where the main story itself forms one continuity and then there is another which includes all the story events and side characters and stuff. There is an "end" goal that the MC is trying to achieve, but there is no indication of when the story might get there. It has basically had two long story arcs and just started a third one.

Though on that last point, the devs do occasionally rebalance and update less used and/or older characters to make them better. There are occasions where you can put forward money to get 100% what you are aiming for and since the game is in a slow but steady course of power creep, some older units can feel lackluster compared to the newer, shinier ones. Having said that, it can be an enormous time sink as there is always the next tier of something good to grind toward and as with any gacha game ever, there is always the desire to put in some money. It is a considerable amount of fun and for a gacha game, going f2p is actually quite viable since you get a fuckton of free rolls over time, especially during certain special seasons and events.
